When a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hits California, high school water polo player Ruby is trapped in a laundromat with Charlie, a boy she had her first conversation with only moments before. She can’t see anything beyond the rubble that she’s trapped beneath, but she’s sure someone will come save them soon. As the hours and days tick by, Ruby and Charlie struggle to stay hopeful—and stay alive. Ruby has only Charlie’s voice and her memories to find the hope to keep holding on. Will the two make it out alive? And if they do, what will they have lost to the earthquake? Riveting, tense, and emotionally complex, Aftershocks weaves together the terror and hope of a catastrophic event while showing the ways that disasters can change and unite us.

Marisa Reichardt is the critically acclaimed author of the young adult novels UNDERWATER and AFTERSHOCKS and the forthcoming A SHOT AT NORMAL. She has a Master of Professional Writing degree from the University of Southern California and dual degrees in English & American Literature and Creative Writing from UC San Diego. Her debut novel, UNDERWATER, was an Indies Introduce New Voices pick, an Indie Next Top 10 pick, a Bank Street College of Education best children’s book of the year, and a 2018 High School Sequoyah masterlist selection from the Oklahoma Library Association. School Library Journal says AFTERSHOCKS is, “an inspiring and complex survival story that examines self-doubt, addiction, loss, love, and the human condition.” And Booklist calls it, “a thrilling, provocative, and empowering look at fighting for survival while remembering the important things in life like friendship, family, and love.”

Jordan Raney is a four-time All-American water polo player who started her career at Mira Costa High School right here in Manhattan Beach where Marisa’s husband, Jon Reichardt, was her coach. She went on to play at Stanford where she helped lead the Cardinal to NCAA Championships in 2015 and 2017. She made her Senior National Team debut in 2017. A standout defender she made her professional debut this past season competing in Greece alongside Team USA teammates Ashleigh Johnson and Stephania Haralabidis. Currently, Jordan continues to play on the USA Women’s National team and is a Tokyo Olympic hopeful.
