What’s it like to be an 8-year-old growing up in a halfway house for the emotionally disturbed and developmentally disabled? Just ask Candi Milo, comedian and Annie-nominated voiceover actor who spent her formative years living in a converted fraternity house that her father ran and where the rest of her family also lived.
“Surviving the Odd” is Milo’s recently released and highly-acclaimed memoir of her childhood and focuses on her father, Tony, a nightclub performer. With his livelihood declining as TV took hold, and wanting to help the emotionally disturbed and developmentally disabled who were suddenly homeless after California deinstitutionalized them, he opens “Milo’s Arms.”
Together, Candi and her family share their lives with the residents while caring for them. “Surviving the Odd” is filled with humor and compassion as Milo navigates social stigma, prejudice, fear, shame, and her own need for love and acceptance. It’s a book that speaks to the resilience of childhood and the deep love of “family”...of any kind.
Milo is a sought-after humorist and inspirational speaker on mental health issues and has given talks about her unusual childhood and how it informed her life as an actor, mother, and passionate advocate for people dealing with mental illness.
At the conclusion of the presentation, Milo will sign copies of her book. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP as space is limited.
