Patchett reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays.

At the center of “These Precious Days” is the title essay, a meditation on an unexpected friendship. When Patchett chose an early galley of actor Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night, she had no idea that the choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to Hank’s assistant, Sooki Raphael, with whom she would form a profound bond.

Patchett is the author of eight novels, including “The Dutch House,” “Bel Canto” and “Commonwealth.” Born in Los Angeles, she now lives in Nashville and co-owns Parnassus Books, an independent bookstore.
