Classic American Literature
with Pam Jenning

{pages} is pleased to present a four-part series on William Faulkner.

"Nobody wants his mule and wagon stalled on the same track the Dixie Limited is roaring down."  Flannery O'Connor could have been talking of no one else but William Faulkner when she made this statement about contemporary writers.  Faulkner's use of stream of consciousness, interior monologue, and multiple narrative points-of-view helped make him a legendary Modernist writer.  Works such as "The Sound and the Fury", "As I Lay Dying", "Absalom! Absalom!" and "The Hamlet" have contributed to his reputation as the American Shakespeare.

Please join us for a trip into Yoknapatawpha County, a literary place Faulkner called his "little postage stamp of native soil".  Here we'll explore how Faulkner used his Southern past and his modernist style to reveal "the human heart in conflict with itself".  The four Faulkner sessions will include a presentation on Faulkner's background and place in American literary history as well as three book club discussions, one centering on selected Faulkner short stories and two on "The Sound and the Fury" led by the fabulous Pam Jenning.

Wednesday August 10, 7pm - All About Faulkner
Wednesday August 24, 7pm - Discussion of Faulkner's short stories
Wednesday September 14, 7pm - Discussion of the first half of "The Sound and the Fury"
Wednesday October 5, 7pm - Discussion of the second half of
"The Sound and the Fury"

Cost:  $15 per session or $50 if you prepay for all four classes in advance.
The cost of the books are separate, but we would appreciate it if you would purchase them from {pages} :)
